Briefly A revolutionary mobile internet platform which allows users to stay connected for free, no matter the status of their data plan — even when they are out of credit. Veon fresh take on messaging capabilities enables users and communities to connect by voice, text, picture, and video through a beautifully designed interface. Challenge A global personal internet platform Veon was created within several distributed team in the Netherlands, Russian Federation, Ukraine, and Pakistan. The head office was located in Netherland. The main challenge faced by all development teams was the synchronization of all efforts and overcoming such difficulties as distance, different time-zones, the language barriers, etc. Distributed teams The project was technologically complex and contained many different modules. Each team was responsible for different modules: core, chat, user`s profile, integrations team. Our team was responsible for personalized recommendations.The release plan was tied to a global marketing strategy. This factor necessitated contributing releases quickly and at regular intervals in collaboration of all other distributed teams. Personalized recommendations module We had to create a module of personalized recommendations that was integrated exactly to the users chat. Depending on the users` interests and needs, the backend sends relevant information. These offers could be in completely different formats: promo-codes, links, QR-codes, etc. A total of over 50 different formats and variations. Developed by our team dynamic frontend had to deliver these offers with a user-friendly interface. Results The product launch was a resounding success in many key markets, including Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, and Pakistan. Experts and analyst called it a transformative move that will change the telecom business once and for all. In less than 90 days the product was downloaded over 2.7 million times in Pakistan and about 8.3 million times overall. The functionality implemented by the Nullgravity team turned out to be one of the most demanded in the product.
